New rule makes practical exams easier: SLC students can now appear in tests at their own schools

School Leaving Certificate examinees now onwards can appear in practical exams for respective subjects in their own schools from where they had registered to take SLC exams.

Bishnu Bahadur Dware, Examination Controller, Office of the Controller of Examination, said the provision has been introduced for the convenience of examinees.

Earlier, examinees had to appear in practical exams at the exam centres fixed by District Practical Examination Conduction Committee. The examinees used to fill exam forms from one school, had to take theoretical exams from another school and appeared in practical exams in third school. “The provision for conducting practical exams has been changed as per the decision made by National Curriculum and Evaluation Council at Curriculum Development Committee to conduct practical exams in examinees’ schools,” said Dware. “As per new rule, the teachers selected by school management committee and school principal will conduct these exams.”

The pass marks for practical exam is eight out of a total of 25 and 24 out of 75. “The examinees should get pass marks in both practical and theoretical exams separately to pass in a particular subject in SLC exam,” he added.

SLC examinees appear in eight subjects with each subject weighing a total of 100 marks, including the practicals.

According to Dware, all practical subjects, except Computer Science, such as English, Accounts, Education and others have 25 marks alloted for practical. Computer Science practical exams weigh 50 marks.

Out of eight subjects in SLC curriculum, English, Nepali, Science, Social Studies, Health, Population and Environment and Mathematics are compulsory subjects while remaining two subjects are optional depending upon availability of particular teacher for the subject in school and electives chosen by students.

Dware further said earlier they used to have financial burden for conducting practical exams in exam centres across the country but now they are relieved from such problem after introduction of the new rule.

SLC exams are usually held in March but exact date has not been fixed yet, said Dware. Students had appeared in altogether 53 subjects in SLC exam last year.
